Walking into the Oceanside Museum of Art, the sunlit white exterior provides a perfect palate cleanser before immersing into the Color of Sound exhibit. Danny’s resounding footsteps up the metal stairs provide the perfect booming beat to match the excited anticipation of what lies ahead. At the top, the Color of Sound brightly welcomes visitors to a space bursting with color and eagerly shares the magical ingenuity of its autistic and neurodivergent artists.
Color of Sound (see more here) is an exhibition of music and synesthesia-themed art curated by The Art of Autism nonprofit and exhibition partner Mainly Mozart. The exhibit immerses the audience into the diverse worlds of synesthesia, where senses can be layered to intrinsically link music with captivating emotions, colors, patterns, and moments. The vivid works of art mixed with the melody of Joel Anderson’s MozArt Eine Klein Nachtmusik fill the room to invite you into the beautiful landscapes of the artists’ minds and provide a glimpse into the wonder of synesthesia.
A silvery-voiced opera singer, the colors of hope and activism, a ship of found treasures, woven mementos, and rhythm’s warm embrace are a few of the many experiences these masterpieces evoke. The artists’ accompanying stories of inspiration serve to invite the audience to appreciate and celebrate the incredible world of neurodiversity.
