Introduction to Issue 08

Dear Friends,

Although the year has already begun, we invite you to linger a while longer in a Janus state, looking backward and forward, as well as to consider the process of moving from one to the other.

The Roman god Janus (for whom the month of January is named) is associated with doorways—beginning, connecting, passing from/through/to—and is depicted with two faces: one looking behind, the other ahead. Our speller friends in our readership (and their families and supporters) recognize how profound a contrast past and present can make, both in how we live our lives and in how we see ourselves. Expressive communication not only reveals parts of us that had been unseen, but also gives us the means to explore, develop, and realize our ability to participate more fully in the world around us.

Those of us who are more seasoned spellers welcome our dear newbie communicators and also hope the year will be filled with a crop of future friends yet to be introduced to accessible communication. Prepare the terrain, sow the seeds, tend the shoots breaking through, nourish emerging minds and souls, and witness the words that blossom.

Beyond the momentous transitions that new skills of communication bring, we will cross other types of thresholds. This year many of us will vote in important elections taking place worldwide. Our advocacy will continue to move our societies away from limitations it formerly placed on us, and to put us on track toward a future with greater potential. On a personal level, life changes will invite us to reflect, become aware of connections, or create new strategies for problem-solving.

Wherever you are in your life, we wish you an enlightened passage from where you have been to where you are going!

Your friend,

Nick
