Dear Friends,

I am so happy to be able to share wonderful submissions from my fellow Spellers, and to meet new peers in the process! William, thank you for sharing this piece, and belated congratulations on your 1 year anniversary with S2C. I hope we can meet soon!

Finding My Voice

William Warren

I used to dream of someday finding a way of communicating. I’ll say it was a prison of silence for many years. I’m not sure how I survived being assumed to be unintelligent and treated like a preschooler. My parents tried so many treatments, but it wasn’t successful in getting my communication where it needed to be. I was excited when I heard my parents talking about a new technique for communication. I don’t know how to describe the feeling when I met EV [Elizabeth Vosseller] and she talked to me like she knew I was smart. It was like she knew a secret about me that no one else knew. It was so amazing. I’m forever grateful to her for teaching my parents about S2C.

I’ll never forget when EV taught me the lesson on rogue planets. She asked me to name a planet other than Earth. I spelled Mercury. She hadn’t taught me that in the lesson, but I knew it. My parents fell out of their chairs in excitement. From that moment on, they spoke to me differently and they were determined to work with me daily. Mom worked on the boards with me progressing to “open” under guidance from EV. It was so thrilling.

I was feeling like the shackles of silence were finally removed. It was like all my prayers were answered, and now I could start living a life I designed.

I’m proud of myself for not giving up. Now I am able to share my thoughts with the world.

My first open sentence was: I AM SMART.
