Middle Age – Nick Pentzell

Janus, you are looking scruffy—
Balder, grayer, slowing down,
Too old for immature thoughts
And childish emotions.
This body isn’t getting any younger.
It’s now or never, dude,
For you to make
Whatever it is you want of your life.
Minutes are wasted in “what ifs,”
In frustration and anxiety,
In daydreams of despair.
Gotta get your act together
And compose arias
For the fat lady to sing at the end,
Or, hey, make some hay
While the sun shines.
Don’t get stuck looking back.
Keep your stride, head up, eyes forward.
Some art, some jokes, a bon mot or two,
Gestures of good faith,
Actions speaking louder than your silent mouth,
Evidence of wisdom
Worn into the rock of your experience:
This lies ahead.
Seriously, man,
Go for it.
